Which embroidery file format do I need?

Machine-embroidery designs come as stitch files, and different machine makers read different ones. The short answer: you do not have to choose. Every design here downloads with every format listed on its page, so you get the whole set and use the one your machine wants.

DST

Tajima · Barudan · Toyota · Ricoma

The commercial-industry standard. The most widely accepted embroidery format — most professional machines read it, which makes it the safest choice if you are unsure.

EXP

Melco · Bernina

Melco's native format. Also read by many Bernina machines.

HUS

Husqvarna Viking

The legacy Husqvarna Viking format. Newer Viking machines generally take VP3 instead.

JEF

Janome · Elna

The native format for current Janome machines, and for Elna models built on the same platform.

JEF+

Janome

An extended Janome format used by their newer machines. If your machine will not read a JEF+, use the plain JEF instead.

PCS

Pfaff

The older Pfaff format, for machines that predate VP3.

PEC

Brother

An older Brother format that ships alongside PES. If your Brother machine reads PES, use that in preference.

PES

Brother · Baby Lock · Bernina

The most common home-machine format. If you stitch on a Brother or Baby Lock, this is almost certainly the file you want.

SEW

Janome

The older Janome format. Included for machines that predate JEF.

VP3

Pfaff · Husqvarna Viking

The current format for Pfaff and newer Husqvarna Viking machines, which share a platform.

XXX

Singer · Compucon

The Singer home-machine format, also used by Compucon software.
